Drop a ball on a curve and it finds the critical points for you. It settles where the curve is flat. Push it exactly hard enough and it balances on the peak, which is flat too.
A critical point is where the derivative is zero or undefined. Those are the only places a smooth function can turn around, so they're the only places a maximum or minimum can hide.
